Artist In Residency (AIR) Programme: Emerging – Mid Career Artists Residency

The Africa Centre opens its call for the 2017 Artists In Residency program. Usually, the residency consists of a four-week stay at the Bellagio Center on Lake Como, Italy. This year, it opens up the residency in Australia, Brazil, Spain, Italy and the United States, with varying residency lengths.

Africa Centre seeks fiction and non-fiction writers, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers, composers, and visual artists, whose work is inspired by or relates to global or social issues. It wants high-caliber African artists, in different stages of their development, from emerging to late career. The artist must be provocative, innovative, and stretching the boundaries of their artistic practice.

To be eligible, you must be over 21 years of age, have a valid passport, be African and must minimally reside in Africa for six months of the year, and must be highly proficient in English.

To apply, submit an application form via the online portal or email it to airsubmissions@africacentre.net. And, ensure your attachments are less than 5MB. If they are larger than 5MB, upload them via Google Drive and share the link.

PARTICIPATING RESIDENCY PROGRAMMES

Bundanon Trust – Australia

Open to professional artists from all disciplines. Offers a studio space, high-speed internet access, and transport once a week into the local town and surrounding. The residency does not cover your feeding or local transport.

You must be self-sufficient and can work independently in a remote, isolated. The residency will from August 8 to Sept. 3, 2018. Visit the website at https://bundanon.com.au/residencies/.

 Fountainhead Residency – Miami

 

Wants emerging artists to well-established artists. The residency offers both living and working accommodation, studio visits by local art professionals, and introduction to Miami’s art community. Residents will also have access to museums & private collections, and will thrive in a supportive environment. The residency team will discuss the specific date of the residency with the AIR award laureate. You can visit the residency at http://www.fountainheadresidency.com/.

Instituto Sacatar – Brazil

Open to artists of any discipline, the residency spans eight weeks. Residents will enjoy a private suite, a separate studio, and additional logistic support. The residency will provide meals (except Saturday evenings, Sundays and Brazilian holidays. It will also arrange laundry service and local contacts consistent with the artist’s interests.

The residency will take place during one of the following time slots: April 9 –  June 4, 2018; June 11 –  Aug. 6, 2018; Aug 20 – Oct. 15, 2018; and Oct. 22 – Dec. 17, 2018. Check out other details at http://sacatar.org/.

Jiwar Creation and Society – Spain

Admits emerging artists from all genres and spans six weeks. Offers internet access, media contacts, and once a week cleaning. It will also organize one event around your project. JIWAR will cover your residency costs. JIWAR will discuss specific dates with the successful candidate. International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) – New York

Seeks mid to late career visual artists and spans three months. The residency includes 24-hour access to a private furnished studio space, regular studio visits from visiting critics, and an advisor; field trips to museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions; and participation in ISCP talks.

The residency award includes participation in ISCP, a stipend for accommodation and living expenses in New York City and round-trip economy airfare between the country in which the awarded artist is in residence and New York City. The residency does not cover insurance, visa, food, and local transportation. The residency will hold from June 1 to Aug. 31, 2018. And, it expects a minimum of 20 hours per week from its residency.
