Bakwa Magazine Short Story Competition

Cameroonians, submit to the Bakwa Magazine Short Story Competition. Founded in 2011, Bakwa is an online magazine that fills the lacuna created by the absence of high standard cultural and literary magazines in Cameroon. So, it focuses on cultural and literary criticism about Cameroon and Africa. It provides a space where African writers can be published, with the intention of boosting Cameroonian and African literature.

You can entries in either English or French and should be between 3000 – 5000 words. Send previously unpublished submissions as PDF and Word attachments to bakwaeditor@gmail.com. Also, subject of the email should be “Story Competition” + “Title of Story.” Same, the body of the email should include your name, email, phone number and country of residence.

Submit one entry per person. Because, Bakwa does not accept multiple submissions. If you can’t submit via email, email Bakwa for alternate submission means.

The winner will receive FCFA 100,000, while the runner-up will receive FCFA 50,000. Bakwa will publish the best submitted stories in a 2017 anthology. It will select a shortlist of six stories in September, wherein a winner and runner-up will be chosen.

Consequently, it will set up a series of post-competition events like writing workshops, readings and a number of translation projects. The judging process will be anonymous. Therefore, the prize administrators will make sure personal information are removed before sending the stories to the judges.
