2017 Writivism Short Story Prize

The Writivism Short Story Prize is an annual award for emerging African writers. The Center for African Cultural Excellence (CACE) administers the award. To qualify, you must be an unpublished writer, resident in an African country. You can only submit one entry for the Writivism Short Story Prize. Submit an original, previously unpublished story. The only exception is a story published on your personal blog. All entries must be in English or French. Word count is between 2,500 – 3,500 words.

Entries must be submitted online. Email your entry to info@writivism.com as Microsoft Word or Rich Text attachments. Do not paste your submission in the body of the email. Also, clearly label your email subject: 2017 Writivism Short Story Prize. However, include in the body of the email other information such as your country of residence, age, legal and pen name, and telephone contact.

Save your file with the title of the story. And, the first page of the story should include the name of the story and the number of words. Format your story as Times New Roman, 12 point font, and 1.5 line spacing. Please do not mention your identity in any parts of the entry.

Other information

Shortlisted writers will receive $100 (USD) and a possible invitation to the annual Writivism Festival. The Festival will take place in Kampala, Uganda, from August 24 – 27, 2017. While the winner will receive $400 (USD) cash and consideration for a one-month writing residency at a university in an African country.

If selected for residency, the winner shall produce a complete first draft of a publishable fiction manuscript before the residency. Also, if you take up the residency, you commit to publishing the edited manuscript, under the Writivism Series with a CACE partner publisher.

Overall, all applicants agree that the CACE may share that their stories have been entered, longlisted or shortlisted for the Prize. Applicants also agree that the CACE may translate submitted stories to English/French and publish them in the annual anthology. Worldwide copyright of each story will remain with the writers. However, the CACE will have unrestricted right to publish and translate the long-listed stories in an anthology and for promotional purposes.
