Deadline: Now kept open all year round
The Jacana Literary Foundation and the Other Foundation seek submissions to their fourth annual Gerald Kraak Award. The award focuses on stories and photographies on gender, human rights and sexuality. To be eligible, you should be an African who lives and works in the continent. The first place prize winner receives R25,000.
Submit the following:
- fiction,
- non-fiction,
- poetry
- visual arts
Also note, the judging panel will select pieces which engage with gender and sexuality in ways that promote new insights into human rights matters.
Submission Guidelines
Submit both unpublished and previously published works written in English. Please number your pages, use a font size of 12, Times New Roman and 1.5 spacing (avoid unnecessary formatting, such as borders).
Also, do not exceed 15,000 words or 10 images. Images must be 300 dpi high resolution. You can submit up to three entries, across categories. However, each entry must be submitted on a separate electronic entry form.
Images will be published in an image section on matte art paper and not in the body of the text. You can submit just one single image. However, you probably should submit a collection of photographs or a photographic essay. As the Gerald Kraak Award’s judges seek works that tell a story or illustrates an idea.
Also, submit a 100-word maximum biography and contact information. Do not include any identifying information on the work(s) you submit. The judges read the submissions blind. As such, applicants remain anonymous until the shortlist has been selected. You can also use a pseudonym should you require one.
The Gerald Kraak Award will not consider handwritten or hard copy entries. You must submit your applications via the online entry form at the bottom of the page.
Intertextuality and references must be appropriately attributed and permissions from copyright holders obtained. This includes poems; song lyrics; quotes and excerpts from books, newspapers, magazines, journals; and reproductions of artwork, photographs or other forms.
The team considers your submission to implicitly indicate your permission for your work to be published in the anthology, if shortlisted. You won’t receive payment or royalty for getting published.
OluTimehin Adegbeye won the third Gerald Kraak Award for her essay, ‘Mothers and Men’. Her submission and the other shortlisted works was published in the Heart of the Matter anthology.
