Call for Submission: U-Rights Magazine

Call for Submission: U-Rights Magazine
Deadline: Nov. 25, 2020.

U-Rights Magazine, an online magazine based in Cross River state, calls for submission of original poetry, fiction/non-fiction, and digital content for its first issue. The team publishes works from anywhere in the world three times a year, though it hopes to publish more of African Writings.

It accepts submissions via email. All submissions should be sent to urightsmag@gmail.com. The subject line should be formatted as your first name and the genre (e.g. Davis: Poetry). And include a brief biographical note with your submission (150 words maximum) and how you want your name to appear if published.

All submissions should be sent as email attachments in docx./doc. format. The team does not accept submissions in PDF and EPUB formats. However, digital contents can be sent in MP3, MP4, WMV, and WMA. You don’t have to include a cover letter and including a brief statement about the theme of your piece(s) is optional.

Do not submit previously published work. Works published on your personal blogs are considered previously published. However, you can submit works uploaded to social media, as long as you remove it prior to publication. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but inform the team if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Specific guidelines for each category are available below:

Poetry:
  • Send 1-5 unpublished poems in a single word document.
  • Submit poems of any length and style. However, poems that are less than 50 lines stand a better chance of being accepted.
  • You can submit poems written in other languages as long as you provide an English translation.
  • Please note that poems with special formatting (e.g. indented lines) may not work well in the online version or with certain browsers
  • If your poem is published, it is automatically placed on consideration for inclusion in the yearly print anthology, Noise. The team will contact you if your work is selected.
  • Upon acceptance, you will be asked to submit an audio recording of your poem. It is optional and the audio will be made available for download on U-Rights website.
  • The team’s not interested in “art for art’s sake”. Your poem must communicate to stand a chance of being accepted. For a sense of the kind of work it seeks, read at least two of the mag’s most recent issues.
Essays:
  • Essays should not be longer than 3,500 words.
  • Send only one essay per submission.
  • All essays should be submitted as word documents attached to the email.
  • Plagiarism is not condoned.
Fiction:
  • Send 1-2 pieces as an email attachment in word format (doc., docx).
  • The pieces should be attached separately.
  • Stories should not exceed 5,000 words.
Digital Contents:
  • Spoken word videos should be submitted in MP4 or WMV formats.
  • Audios should be submitted in MP3, MP4 or MWA formats.
  • The length of the video/audio should not exceed 12 minutes.

The team will respond to all submissions within 2-3 weeks of receipt. If it fails to respond to your submissions within this time, send a query to urightsmag@gmail.com. The issues will be read by four readers. Any selection made by the readers is final.

The team cannot pay its contributors at this time but looks forward to changing this policy with time. All rights revert to you upon publication. But the team asks that you cite U-Rights Magazine as the first publisher in cases of reprints. All questions concerning these guidelines should be forwarded to urightsmag@gmail.com.
