Deadline: Oct. 30, 2019.
There is a brand new community for African poets: Rari. Rari is a peer-learning community open to any poet of African descent. It fosters growth through carefully curated workshops and a platform to showcase beautiful poetry. The team’s goal is ultimately to promote underrepresented African voices in the global poetry landscape.
The team is currently accepting applications for its first workshop. The January 2020 session will take place on Jan. 12 to Feb. 22. This free workshop is an intensive, craft-enhancing experience aimed at stimulating the creativity and productivity of participating poets. The team will be host writing workshops in January and September of every year starting January 2020. Other information is available on the Rari website.
Participants will work side by side with other poets to sharpen their eye for good writing. And the Rari team will provide tips and tricks on how to make poems stronger and more effective. These will help poets turn their drafts into stunning poems. Over the course of six weeks, poets will complete weekly writing assignments and receive constructive and dynamic feedback from other participants in a peer-learning model.
Participating poets will also engage with existing African poetry as they read and discuss works by both established and emerging writers. Each writer will leave with a portfolio of finished works and the Rari team will offer individualized tips on publication and journal submissions. There will be a maximum of 15 people per workshop. This is to ensure that the team can pay enough attention to each individual and their work.
To participate, poets must be of African descent. Submit 3-5 poems and a 250-word essay on either your favorite poem or your approach to poetry. Each poem should not exceed one page. Send in your application via this google form by Oct. 30, 2019, at 00.00 am GMT. And please submit your application as a single pdf file.
If you are selected, you will receive an acceptance email by the first week of December 2019.
