Deadline: Oct. 15, 2018.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Tin House publishes fiction, essays, and poetry. Tin House contributors have won major American literary awards, such as the O. Henry Prize. The magazine currently accepts submissions for its first three issues of 2019:
- Summer 2019 and Winter 2019: No theme, just quality fiction, nonfiction, and poetry to cool off with, in the shade.
- Fall 2019: The Horror—From the mundane frights of everyday life to the truly macabre, if it makes your hair stand on end, we want to hear about it. Send us your scariest stories, eeriest essays, and most petrifying poetry!
The team looks for any and every angle on its themed issues. And, it will consider each submission for all upcoming issues regardless of theme. However, it asks that you make a note in your cover letter if you wish to be considered for a particular theme.
It also requests that you submit only one story or essay (10,000-word limit), or up to five poems at a time. And with your work, include a cover letter that indicates word count, brief publication history (if applicable), and whether the submission is fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. Upload your submission through Tin House’s Submittable.
Multiple submissions will not be read. Also, it only accepts previously unpublished works for publication. Tin House does accept simultaneous submissions. In the event that the work is accepted for publication elsewhere, promptly inform the team.
The team will do its best to respond within six months. However, in some cases, the response may take longer. Currently, it is much longer. Please wait until you hear back from the team before submitting new work for consideration.
