Flash Fiction Ghana announces the opening of submissions to its writing prize, “A 1000 for 1000 Writing Prize”. For its inaugural year, the prize will accept Young Adult Literature in 1000 words or less. Individual submissions can be on any theme in either Fiction or Creative Nonfiction. The prize will award the top three winners from the contest in each category (Fiction or Creative Nonfiction) with 1000 cedis, 500 cedis, and 200 cedis respectively.

Prize Details

There are two categories for the prize – Fiction and Creative Nonfiction. The prize is open to Ghanaian writers from the ages of 18 to 30 and living in Ghana. Submissions are open from November 20, 2020 till 15th January, 2021. Selected submissions from the contest will be edited and published in an anthology later in 2021.

Only Ghanaian writers living in Ghana will be awarded prizes. However, Ghanaian writers in the diaspora within the 18-30years age range are encouraged to submit for the anthology. Flash Fiction Ghana is keen on promoting Ghanaian writers residing in Ghana and one of the aims of this prize is to create more opportunities in the local literary scene.

A Shortlist will be announced on 4th February, 2021. The three winners in each category will be announced on 1st March, 2021.

Submission Guidelines

– Writers must be within the age range of 18-30years at the time of submitting to the prize or anthology. While the prize and anthology is open to all kinds of themes, submissions must qualify as Young Adult literature (10-18 years old).

– Only submissions in English will be accepted. Writers should send only one submission. Submissions should be sent as word document attachments, in Times New Roman text font with font size 12. Attached documents should be saved as the title of the fiction or nonfiction submission. The title should also appear in the body of the document at the top of the first page together with a wordcount of the submission. (Note: submissions should be within the 1000-word limit.)

Writers should not include their names in the attached submission document. However, the body of the email should include a 200 word bio with the writer’s name, age, and country of residence. Writers’ names should reflect what appears on relevant documentation to authenticate or confirm citizenship and residence.

– Reminder: Submissions are open to Ghanaian writers living in and outside of Ghana. But submissions by writers outside of Ghana will only be considered for the anthology. All submissions (for the prize and for the anthology) should be sent to prize@flashfictionghana.com.

– Writers in Ghana should submit with the email subject line “Flash fiction Ghana 2020 prize-Fiction” OR “Flash Fiction Ghana 2020 prize-Creative Nonfiction”. While Writers in the diaspora should submit with the email subject line “Flash Fiction Ghana Anthology Submission-Fiction” or “Flash Fiction Ghana Anthology Submission-Creative Nonfiction”.
