The Programme for Innovation in Artform Development (PIAD) presents OPENLab 2018, a national laboratory for early and mid-career artists and creative practitioners.  Applicants must be South African citizens or have permanent resident status in South Africa. Proof of citizenship or residency may be required.

It is an open and intensive residency platform aimed to generate new strategies and ideas in site-specific, experimental and interdisciplinary practice. PIAD is an initiative by the Vrystaat Arts Festival and the University of the Free State. And OPENLab 2018 is funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and supported by Modern Art Projects (MAP) South Africa.

Up to 14 Artists from across South Africa will participate in the Lab, led by a team of national and international artists and curators including the Coordinating Facilitator, Paul Gazzola (Australia), Sethembile Msezane (South Africa) and Ella Zeigler (Germany). The opportunity is open to creative practitioners working in the visual arts, performance, architecture, fashion, dance, new media, sound art, design, community arts and other creative pursuits.

OPENLab 2018 will take place from July 11 – 22, 2018 at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein alongside the Vrystaat Art festival. It will also involve an intense studio held at Modern Art Projects (MAP), Richmond in the Northern Cape.

Successful OPENLab participants for 2018 will be announced on Monday 4, June 2018 on PIAD’s Facebook page as well as the Vrystaat Arts Festival’s website.
