Cornell University awards $15,000 for its Mabati Cornell Kiswahili Prize yearly. The prize honors writers with unpublished manuscripts, or recently published books (within two years) written in Kiswahili. So, you can submit your manuscript or books in any of the fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and graphic novels categories. The $15,000 is divided into $5,000 for 1st place fiction, $5,000 for 1st place poetry, $3,000 for 2nd place in any genre, and $2,000 for 3rd place in any genre

Along with the Mabati Cornell Kiswahili prize money, East African Educational Publishers (EAEP) publishes winning entries in Kiswahili. Also, the Africa Poetry Book Fund translates and publishes the best poetry book. To enter, email your submission to kiswahiliprize@cornell.edu. In addition, your submission should not exceed 50,000 words for fiction and 60 pages for poetry.

Create a cover page that includes the name of the story and the number of words. Format your entry as Times New Roman, 12 point font, with 1.5 line spacing. Attach your entry as Microsoft Word or Rich Text format, with the title of the story as the file name. Therefore, do not embed or copy and paste your story into the body of the email. In the body of the email, include your legal name, pen name, telephone number, short bio, age, and country of residence.

And, if you plan to submit an already published work, have your publisher send three (3) hard copies to Africana Studies and Research Center, 310 Triphammer Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

Please, direct all inquiries to kiswahiliprize@cornell.edu.
